How to calculate the dimensions of water tank for 2lakh and 5lakh capacity for circular and rectangular water tank

water tank dimensions are major part in tank design. Generally all the living organisms required portable water in order to survive in the world. Human and other organisms health is depending upon the quality of portable water used in daily life. Due to the current situation it is not easy to provide the quality portable water to every individual and community; so the water storage is critical in some counties. In the most of the countries water is distributed through the pipe lines.

Water tank is generally used to store the liquids like water, oil, petrol, diesel and other liquids for the usage. In the designing process of water tank initially we need to determine the dimensions.

Types of water tanks

In general depending upon the usage for water the tanks are divided by following three types

  1. Resisting on ground level water tank
  2. Under ground water tank
  3. Elevated type water tank

Resisting on ground level tanks

Basically these types of tanks are used in distribution system for transferring the water from one location to other location. The water tank is completely rest on the ground level and RCC structure is generally preferred to make this type of tank. The water distribution is carried out with gravity force and water pumps some times.

Underground water tank

In this case the water tank is constructed below the ground level. Beams and columns are not used in this case all the walls are constructed with concrete material with suitable amount of steel reinforcement. The perfect example in this case in water tanks constructed in apartments, petrol bunks etc. the water distribution completely done with the help of water pumps.

Elevated type water tank

These are most frequently used water tanks by civil engineers the columns and beams are constructed initially and the water tank total structure is resist on the top beams. The water distribution is easy in this type. The water is completely done with the help of gravitational force from top to bottom.

Classification of water tank as per Shape

As per the shape related to the design consideration the water tanks are classified in to following types

  1. Circular water tank
  2. Square water tank
  3. Rectangular water tank
  4. Intze water tank
  5. Spherical water tank
  6. Conical bottom water tank
  7. Polygon water tank

Calculation of Dimensions of water tank for rectangular shape

Case 1: 2 Lakh capacity tank

Volume of water tank = 200000 liters

For water 1m3 water =1000 liters

So by converting water from liters to m3

Volume = 200000/1000 =200m3

Let us consider a water tank which is consisting of length of X and width of Y and height of Z

The volume of tank is XYZ here

Now by assuming

Length X = 8m

Width Y = 6m

And Height Z = 4.5m

Volume of tank     = 8mX6mX4.5m

= 216m3

The volume of water tank greater than the requirements 200m3

Hence the assumed dimensions are satisfied

So the final dimension of rectangular water tank is 8mX6mX4.5m.

Case 2: 5 Lakh capacity tank

Volume of water tank = 500000 liters

For water 1m3 water =1000 liters

So by converting water from liters to m3

Volume = 500000/1000 =500m3

Let us consider a water tank which is consisting of length of X and width of Y and height of Z

The volume of tank is XYZ here

Now by assuming

Length X = 12m

Width Y = 8m

And Height Z = 5.5m

Volume of tank     = 12mX8mX5.5m

= 528m3

The volume of water tank greater than the requirements 500m3

Hence the assumed dimensions are satisfied

So the final dimension of rectangular water tank is 12mX8mX5.5m.

Calculation of Dimensions of water tank for circular shape

Case 1: 2 Lakh capacity tank

Volume of water tank = 200000 liters

For water 1m3 water =1000 liters

So by converting water from liters to m3

Volume = 200000/1000 =200m3

Let us consider a water tank which is consisting diameter is D and height is H

The volume of tank is Πr2H

Now by assuming

Diameter D = 8m and radius is r =4m

And Height H = 4 m

Volume of tank     =  Πr2H

= ΠX42X 4

=201m3

The volume of water tank is approximately equal to 201m3

Hence the assumed dimensions are satisfied

So the final dimension of circular water tank is 8m diameter and 4m height.

Case 2: 5 Lakh capacity tank

Volume of water tank = 500000 liters

For water 1m3 water =1000 liters

So by converting water from liters to m3

Volume = 500000/1000 =500m3

Let us consider a water tank which is consisting diameter is D and height is H

The volume of tank is Πr2H

Now by assuming

Diameter D = 12m and radius is r =6m

And Height H = 4.5 m

Volume of tank     =  Πr2H

= ΠX62X 4.5

=509m3

The volume of water tank is approximately equal to 509m3

Hence the assumed dimensions are satisfied

So the final dimension of circular water tank is 12m diameter and 4.5m height.

Well now the above explained concepts are related to the complete calculation of dimensions for 2lakh and 5lakh liters capacity water tank in rectangular and circular case. For Rectangular shape with 2lakh capacity dimensions are obtained as Length =8m, width =6m and height =4.5m, Rectangular shape with 5lakh capacity dimensions are obtained as Length =12m, width =8m and height =5.5m, circular shape with 2lakh capacity dimensions are obtained as Diameter =8m and height=4m. and finally for 5lakh capacity dimensions are obtained as Diameter =12m and height=4.5m
