How to calculate volume of concrete per cubic meter? Volume of concrete for 1m3 slab area?

In this article I will explain you how to calculate the volume of concrete per cubic meter, volume of concrete for 1m3 slab volume and how to calculate the quantity of cement, fine aggregates, coarse aggregates and water required for 1 cubic meter slab section.

The volume of the concrete is depends upon the following factors

  1. Grade of the concrete
  2. Ratio of Wet volume to dry volume of concrete
  3. Density of cement
  4. Density of sand
  5. Density of coarse aggregates

Grade of the concrete

The grade of the concrete plays important role in the calculation of volume of concrete per cubic meter. For different grades the mix proportion values will changes and the mix ratio is mainly depends upon the material properties used in the concrete.

For this article am assuming the grade of the concrete is M20 which is having mix ratio is 1:1.5:3 and water cement ratio is assumed as 0.5.

In this mix 5ratio 1 indicates the cement material proportion, 1.5 indicates the fine aggregates proportion, 3 indicates the coarse aggregates proportion and 0.5 indicates the water proportion for the M15 grade concrete mix.

Wet volume to the dry volume of concrete

The ratio of wet volume to the dry volume of the concrete mix is also an important factor we need to consider in the calculation of volume of concrete mix.  The ratio of wet volume to dry volume is varies in between 1.54 to 1.57.

Density of cement

The density of cement is the ratio of mass or weight of the cement to the unit volume of cement.  It is measured in kg/m3. Value of density depending upon the material type here the density of cement assumed as 1440kg/m3.

Density of sand

The density of sand or fine aggregates is the ratio of mass or weight of sand to the volume of sand. It is also measured in kg/m3.  The density of sand is 1450kg/m3.

Density of coarse aggregates

The density of coarse aggregates is the ratio of mass or weight of san to the volume of coarse aggregates. It is also measured in kg/m3.  The density of sand is 1500kg/m3.

How to calculate volume of concrete per cubic meter?

Let us consider a slab which shown in the below figure

volume of concrete
1 Cubic meter volume slab

By taking length of slab = 3m

Width of the slab is = 3.34m

And thickness of slab = 0.1m

The volume of concrete = length of slab X Width of slab X Thickness of slab

=3X3.34X0.1

=1m3

Mix ratio of M20 grade concrete is 1:1.5:3 and w/c is 0.5

Here Cement ratio (CR) = 1

Sand ratio (SR) =1.5

Coarse aggregates ratio (CAR) = 3

Water ratio (WR) = 0.5

Total ratio (TR) =1+1.5+3+0.5 = 5.5

Wet volume/Dry volume = 1.54 to 1.57

Calculation of weight of cement for volume of concrete per cubic meter

Density of cement = (Mass of cement)/(volume of cement)

So, Mass of cement = Density of cement X Volume of cement

And Volume of cement = (CR/TR) X (Wet volume/Dry volume)

= (1/5.5) X (1.54)

=0.28m3.

Now mass of cement = 1440 X 0.28 = 403.2kgs

Calculation of weight of sand for volume of concrete per cubic meter

Density of sand = (Mass of sand)/(volume of sand)

So, Mass of sand= Density of sand X Volume of sand

And Volume of sand = (SR/TR) X (Wet volume/Dry volume)

= (1.5/5.5) X (1.54)

=0.42m3

Now mass of sand = 1450 X 0.42 = 609kgs

Calculation of weight of coarse aggregates for volume of concrete per cubic meter

Density of sand = (Mass of coarse aggregates)/(volume of coarse aggregates)

So, Mass of sand= Density of coarse aggregates X Volume of coarse aggregates

And Volume of coarse aggregates = (SR/TR) X (Wet volume/Dry volume)

= (3/5.5) X (1.54)

=0.84m3

Now mass of coarse aggregates = 1500 X 0.84 = 1260kgs

Calculation of water content in concrete volume for volume of concrete per cubic meter

W/C = 0.5

Water = 0.5 X C

= 0.5X403.2

=201.6 Liters

Conclusions for volume of concrete per cubic meter

Well now the above explained concepts are related to the volume of concrete for 1m3 slab volume.

For the volume calculation M15 grade concrete is assumed with 1:1.5:3 mix ratio. The slab dimensions is assumed is 3X3.34X0.1 in dimensions. For making 1m3 volume of concrete as per the calculations it is obtained as  403.2 kgs of cement, 609 kgs of fine aggregates, 1260 kgs of coarse aggregates and 201.6 liters of water.
