Which concrete mix is best site mix or ready mix? Cost comparison of site mix and ready mix concrete?

Concrete is the most popular material now a day’s using in the construction world. The concrete is the mixture of cement, fine aggregates, coarse aggregates with suitable amount of the water and admixture if required. The major use of admixture is to reduce the water content and to increase the strength. in this topic I will explain you which concrete mix is best RMC mix or site mix in construction.

Depending upon the various usages the concrete mixes are classified into two types

  1. Site mix concrete
  2. Ready mix concrete

Site mix concrete

The process of preparing concrete mix at site at the time of commencement of construction is called as site mix concrete. In this case the materials like cement, fine aggregates, coarse aggregates and other ingredients are collected before construction and then mix the materials to make concrete with suitable grade. This type of concrete is helps in small constructions.

Ready mix concrete

The process of preparing the concrete mix at the plant is called as ready mix concrete. In this case the concrete mixture prepared by using various steps initially the mix proportions are made for the concrete depending upon the material properties. And then batching is made according to the mix proportions, after mixing the concrete fill the concrete in RMC vehicle, and finally transportation is done to the required site.  This type of the concrete mix is frequently used in the mega projects, roads, bridges and high rise building structures, etc.

Difference between RMC mix and site mix

The below table shown the major comparison of 6 key points related to the RMC mix and site mix concrete.

S. No Ready mix concrete Site mix concrete
1 This concrete mix is generally used in mega projects like high rise buildings, roads, bridges etc. This mix is used in used only in small construction projects and low rise buildings.
2 The consistency of concrete is high because all the materials are mixed at the single time with suitable proportions. The consistency of site mix is low because materials mix proportion is done with trials in cyclic process and it is difficult to maintain similar mix in all the trials.
3 In this type it requires less labor to pore the concrete. In this type it requires huge labor to transport, to mix and to pore the concrete.
4 It is recommended for design mixes based on material properties and concrete grades greater than M20 type. It is recommended for less grades like M5, M10, M15 and M20 type concrete mixtures.
5 It is requires less space in site for parking the vehicle. It requires more space for material storage, mixing of materials and transporting the concrete.
6 In this mix it is easy to monitor the mix proportions. In this type of mix it is very difficult to monitor the mix proportions.

The complete concepts of which concrete mix is beast ready mix concrete or site mix concrete is explained in my YouTube channel Civil engineering by shravan see the details below.

Cost comparison of ready mix concrete and site mix concrete

The cost required for 1 cubic meter concrete made with RMC is approximately need 4000 to 4400 Indian rupees and vehicle charge (material transport) is extra. For making the 1 cubic meter concrete in site mix it requires approximately need 3800 to 4200 Indian rupees.

Example 1: Cost comparison of 10 cubic meter concrete

Let us consider a building which requires 10 cubic meter concrete to make the slab with M25 grade mix. The below specified calculations shows the example cost calculations for the RMC mix and site mix concrete.

RMC Mix concrete

It is requires approximately 4000 to 4400 Indian rupees for 1 cubic meter

We need 10 cubic meter concrete

So finally it needed 10 times of 4000 to 4400 total cost. Which is of 40000 to 44000 Indian rupees and vehicle cost is extra as per transportation charge.

Site Mix concrete

It is requires approximately 3800 to 4200 Indian rupees for 1 cubic meter

We need 10 cubic meter concrete

So finally it needed 10 times of 3800 to 4200 total cost. Which is of 38000 to 42000 Indian rupees and vehicle cost is extra as per transportation charge.

Example 2: Cost comparison of 20 cubic meter concrete

Let us consider a building which requires 20 cubic meter concrete to make the slab with M25 grade mix. The below specified calculations shows the example cost calculations for the RMC mix and site mix concrete.

RMC Mix concrete

It is requires approximately 4000 to 4400 Indian rupees for 1 cubic meter

We need 20 cubic meter concrete

So finally it needed 20 times of 4000 to 4400 total cost. Which is of 80000 to 88000 Indian rupees and vehicle cost is extra as per transportation charge.

Site Mix concrete

It is requires approximately 3800 to 4200 Indian rupees for 1 cubic meter

We need 20 cubic meter concrete

So finally it needed 20 times of 3800 to 4200 total cost. Which is of 38000 to 42000 Indian rupees and vehicle cost is extra as per transportation charge.

Conclusions of which mix is best ready mix concrete or normal mix

Well now the above explained concepts are related to which type of concrete mix is best ready mix or RMC mix. Basically for a low rise building it is requires normal site mix and for mega projects and high rise buildings it is requires RMC mix. RMC mix is having more consistency than the site mix. In RMC mix it is requires approximately 4000 to 4400 Indian rupees for 1 cubic meter and in site mix it is requires approximately 3800 to 4200 Indian rupees for 1 cubic meter
