Which is best for building construction spiral reinforced column and tied reinforced column difference between spiral reinforced and tied reinforced column
Spiral reinforced column and tied reinforced columns are widely using now a day’s in most of the circular column constructions. Basically columns are the vertical structural members used to transfer the loads from the beams to foundation. The columns takes the axial loads which are acted at the center of gravity of the column members. In this article you are able to learn about some basic concepts related to the spiral reinforced columns and the tied reinforced columns and the difference between them, we will conclude which column section is best in the construction as per the advantages.
Spiral reinforced column
The spiral reinforced columns are generally used in the circular cross section columns, in this the ties are used in the shape of the spiral shape and they are wrapped around the main reinforced bars. When the load on the column reached to optimal value (ultimate load) then the structure will gives you the warning in the form of the cracks to take necessary actions in this case it is the major advantage in the spiral reinforced column. The below figure shows the general view of the spiral reinforced column used in the building construction.
This columns sections also used in the earth quake resistant building designs to reduce the seismic loading intensity values. By using the reinforcement as spiral shape the value of the compressive strength increases. For making the reinforcement in the shape of the spiral the skilled labour is required that is main disadvantage in this case because of this reason the spiral reinforced columns are used rarely in the construction field. Since we are using circular shape cross section we required minimum of 6 numbers of main reinforced bars as per the IS code provision standard system. The minimum diameter of the spiral reinforced bar is 12mm and the distance between the main reinforcement bars should not be more than 300mm.
Tied reinforced column
In most of the construction sites this type of the reinforced columns are used. The shape of the ties are in the form of any shape like circular, square, rectangular, polygon based on the cross section shape of the column. To maintain the main reinforcement bar in the vertical position ties are used in this column and are used to resist the gravity loading conditions namely dead load, live load and floor loads. The strength values are increases by using the ties reinforced columns. The below figure shows the column section with tied reinforced bars used in the building construction.
The major disadvantage in the tied reinforced column is that it will not give you the warning before it fails when it carry the optimal values of loads (ultimate load). The major advantage is that the skilled labour is not required for making this column because of this reason in most of the constructions using now a days. Since we are using various shapes of the columns in this the number of minimum bar required for square, rectangular column is 4 numbers and for the circular column is 6 numbers as per the IS code provision standard system. For tied reinforced column also the minimum diameter of the spiral reinforced bar is 12mm and the distance between the main reinforcement bars should not be more than 300mm which is similar to spiral reinforced column.
Difference between Spiral reinforced columns and tied reinforced columns
The below table shows the basic differences between the spiral and tied reinforced columns used in the construction industry
S. No | Spiral reinforced column | Tied reinforced column |
1 |
The spiral reinforced columns are consisting of cylindrical with continuous spiral bars wrapped around them. | The tied reinforced columns are generally any shape like circular, rectangular, square, based on the shape of the column section. |
2 |
This columns are used mainly for the circular shaped cross sections. | This columns are used for the any shape namely square, rectangular, circular, polygon based on the shape of the column. |
3 |
The spiral reinforced column sections restricts the concrete in lateral expansion. | Ties are used to maintain the main reinforced bars in the position. |
4 |
By using spiral reinforced columns the strength values are increases and they are used in the reduction of seismic loading conditions. | This reinforced columns are also used to increase the strength values and generally used in the gravity loading considerations. |
5 |
The spiral reinforced columns will gives the warning before the fail allows you to take proper actions | The ties reinforced columns will not give any warning before they fail due to heavy loads and collapse unexpectedly. |
6 |
For making spiral reinforced columns the skilled labour is required | For making tied reinforced columns the skilled labour is not required |
7 |
Minimum of 6 numbers of main reinforced bar are required in this case | In the tied reinforced columns minimum of 4 bars required for the square and rectangular columns and 6 bars required for the circular columns. |
8 |
The dimeter of the reinforced bar should not be less than the 12mm and the distance between the longitudinal bar is not more than 300mm. | In this also the dimeter of the reinforced bar should not be less than the 12mm and the distance between the longitudinal bar is not more than 300mm. |

Conclusion of which is best for building construction spiral reinforced column and tied reinforced column
Well now the above explained concepts are related to the basic concepts of spiral reinforced column and tied reinforced column and the difference between them. Asper the observation because of less availability of labour in the field of construction spiral reinforcement column is not using. But asper the safety of the structure the spiral column will give us the warning before they fail whereas the tied reinforced column will not give the warning before they fail.
So as per the strength and safety point of view we will consider spiral reinforced column for the circular column, but as per the easy construction methodology we use tied reinforced column.
