Column sizes for various floors in building design | column dimensions | two storey building column sizes | civil engineering |
Column sizes are the important aspect in buildings. The column is a vertical member which is helps to transfer the load from beams to foundation. Depends upon the usage the columns like rectangular, square, circular and polygon columns are used in building design. The below image shows the various cross sections of columns.
Sample column cross section |
The dimensions (or) cross section of column is important assert in building design. As per the Indian code provisions the minimum size of a column is taken as 9”X9” which is approximately equal to 230mmX230mm.
Basic Rules in Column sizes
The following are the basic rules we need to consider for column design they are
- Minimum column size should be taken as 9”X9” (230mmX230mm).
- Minimum Bar diameter is taken as 12mm.
- Grade of the concrete should be at least M20.
- Concrete cover is taken in between 25mm to 50mm values.
- If possible use square columns only.
- At least take 4 no’s of bars in column.
- The top and bottom area of the column should be same.
- The center to center distance between the columns minimum is 3m and maximum value is 5m.
- Spacing of the lateral ties should be taken as 100mm dimensions
Factors effecting on the column sizes
The below specified are the major factors to be considered for the column design
- Number of floors
- Loading condition
- Center to center distance between the column.
1. Number of Floors
The number of floors is directly proportional to the column sizes, if the number of floors are increases (height of the building increases) the column size definitely increases and if the number of floors are less the size of column is decreases.
2. Loading condition
Loading is the most important factor to be considered in column design; the loads are two types gravity loads and lateral loads. The loading condition is also directly proportional to dimensions of the column. If the total load on the building increases the dimensions of the column is also increases and if the less amount of the loading is taken by the building then the less dimensions of column are assumed in building design.
3. Center to center distance between columns
As per the code provisions the minimum center to center distance between the columns is 3m and maximum distance is 5m, the dimensions of column is also effect the center to center distance between the column. If the columns center to center distance is increases the column size increases.
Column sizes for various floors
The below specified table shows the column sizes for single storey building to ten storey building structure. The below column sizes of building are only my personal experience not the exact values. The values are depends upon the various building considerations.
